Senior/Lead Java Developer (Bazel & IntelliJ Plugin)
We are looking for a Java Developer who thrives on solving complex technical challenges and building developer tools that “just work.” This project focuses on making Bazel, a highly capable build system, integrate seamlessly with the IntelliJ platform, two sophisticated systems that need to operate together smoothly for tens of thousands of developers worldwide.
We need someone who can think critically, communicate openly, and balance pragmatism with long-term vision. You should be able to question overly optimistic estimates (and explain why), propose practical solutions, and deliver results while highlighting trade-offs. Beyond contributing code, you will act as a mentor, knowledge sharer, and big-picture thinker, helping ensure the team avoids pitfalls and drives the project forward.
Essential functions
Stay on top of technical developments in Bazel itself and the ecosystem, as well as within IntelliJ, and make sure our plugin is prepared.
Engage with language plugin and platform teams to make changes enabling better Bazel support. This includes topics like project model, source compilation and highlighting.
Participate in the design and implementation of important features, like making the edit-build feedback loop fast for the user in an incremental live editing environment while working with a build tool optimized for batch compilation.
Investigate and fixing performance bottlenecks in areas such as project sync and project model representation.
Work directly with customers to investigate issues arising on their codebases.
Pair up with other team members and review their code. Help us avoid pitfalls.
Be the final arbiter in all our controversial technical discussions.
Qualifications
Proven experience working with complex systems with many moving parts.
Solid Java development skills with a track record of building maintainable, high-quality code.
Hands-on experience with Bazel, especially Bazel tooling.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate trade-offs.
Excellent communication skills and willingness to share knowledge within the team.
Would be a plus
Experience developing IntelliJ plugins or working with other IDE platforms.
Familiarity with Kotlin, or motivation to strengthen your Kotlin skills.
Experience optimizing performance in large build systems or IDE tooling.
Previous mentorship or leadership experience.
