Senior Big Data Engineer (Fully remote from Turkey)
We’re looking for a Senior Big Data Engineer to support the modernization of a large-scale enterprise data platform by migrating from an on-premises HDFS/Hive ecosystem to cloud object storage. The project leverages technologies like Apache Spark, Iceberg, and Kubernetes to enable scalable, future-ready data infrastructure.
Note: This role requires availability for evening calls (after 9 AM PST) with US and India teams, more than once per week.
Essential functions
Develop and maintain Spark-based ETL/ELT pipelines for data migration
Write clean, testable Scala (primary) and Python (secondary) code
Implement data validation and quality checks during migration
Support troubleshooting during migration phases
Qualifications
Strong experience with Scala (primary) and Python (secondary)
Expertise in Apache Spark (batch & streaming)
Deep understanding of HDFS internals and migration strategies
Hands-on experience with Apache Iceberg or similar table formats (Delta Lake, Hudi)
Running Spark/Flink on Kubernetes (e.g., Spark-on-K8s operator)
Familiarity with object storage systems (e.g., Ceph, AWS S3)
Experience building large-scale data ingestion and transformation pipelines
Knowledge of Terraform and Helm for infrastructure provisioning
Would be a plus
Experience with Apache Flink
Background in large-scale data platform modernization/migration
Prior experience with large tech organizations and custom data tooling
