Senior Big Data Engineer
We are hiring a Senior Big Data Engineer for a project focused on modernizing and scaling an enterprise data platform. The primary objective is to migrate the existing on-premises HDFS and Hive-based ecosystem to a Cloud Object Storage environment.
This transition aims to reduce infrastructure maintenance overhead, improve scalability, and enable advanced analytics through Apache Iceberg, offering better performance, versioned datasets, and native compatibility with modern data processing engines.
Please note that this role requires working hours extending until 10-11 PM Yerevan time.
Essential functions
Perform functional testing, code validation, and automated data quality checks for all pipeline changes
Validate Spark/Flink job outputs to ensure correctness, completeness, and reliability of the migrated data
Apply SQL and analytics tools (e.g., Jupyter, Superset) to verify data consistency and accuracy
Develop and maintain data ingestion and transformation jobs; document the testing outcomes
Implement Spark-based ETL/ELT jobs for moving data from HDFS/Hive to cloud storage
Write clean, testable, and maintainable Scala/Python code for data pipelines
Apply data quality checks and validations during migration
Document technical work, including pipeline design and operational procedures
Participate in code reviews and follow best practices defined by the team
Support troubleshooting and bug fixing during migration activities
Qualifications
Strong experience in code validation and functional testing
Ability to prepare unit and integration tests
Experience verifying Spark jobs, validating code, and ensuring accurate migration results
Willingness to participate in occasional calls with US and India teams
Proficiency in Scala (primary) and Python (secondary)
Expert-level experience with Apache Spark (batch & streaming)
Deep understanding of HDFS internals and migration strategies
Experience with Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, or Apache Hudi
Hands-on experience running Spark and/or Flink on Kubernetes
Experience with distributed blob storage (e.g., Ceph, AWS S3)
Background in building ingestion, transformation, and enrichment pipelines for large-scale datasets
Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, Helm)
Would be a plus
Quality Assurance engineering experience
Experience with Apache Flink
Prior experience in migration projects or large-scale data platform modernization
