Backend Engineer (Java / GCP)

Novi Sad, Belgrade, Nis, Serbia

We are seeking a Backend Engineer to support the cloud modernization and platform stabilization of a core in-store application for the world’s largest home improvement retailer. In this role, you will modernize legacy dependencies into cloud-native microservices on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), boost system resiliency, and enhance observability. Working alongside internal engineering anchors, you will leverage AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate production deliverables on a high-priority timeline.

Essential functions

  • Design and build robust backend microservices using Java.

  • Improve system resiliency, performance, and monitoring across cloud-native environments.

  • Set up observability dashboards and telemetry using GCP native services, Grafana, and Looker.

  • Integrate enterprise data solutions across Cloud Spanner, Cloud SQL, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Elastic.

  • Collaborate closely in a paired associate-anchor model, actively using AI coding tools (Claude / GitHub Copilot) to accelerate refactoring, testing, and feature delivery.

Qualifications

  • Proven hands-on experience in enterprise environments using Java and Spring Boot / MVC / WebFlux.

  • Proven hands-on experience architecting and deploying services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

  • Practical, hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools (Claude or GitHub Copilot) for production refactoring, testing, and debugging.

  • Strong background in system resiliency, monitoring, and observability within cloud ecosystems.

  • Hands-on experience with containerization and CI/CD tools (Docker, GitHub Actions, or Cloud Foundry).

Would be a plus

  • Familiarity with search and observability suites like Elasticsearch, Grafana, or Looker.

  • Experience operating within paired programming or associate-anchor delivery models.
